FAQs – Maintenance & Aftercare
Learn about common window and door problems and their solutions.
How should I clean my uPVC or aluminium frames?
The best way is the simplest: a soft cloth and a bucket of warm, soapy water. Avoid using abrasive cream cleaners, scouring pads, or harsh chemical solvents as they can damage the surface finish.
How do I clean the glass on my new windows?
Any standard household glass cleaner and a microfibre cloth will give you a great, streak-free finish.
Do my window and door locks need any maintenance?
A little care goes a long way. We recommend lubricating all moving parts, including hinges and locking mechanisms, about once a year with a light, silicone-based lubricant. Avoid using heavy oils, which can attract dirt and clog the mechanism.
Can you repair a scratched window frame?
Minor surface scratches can sometimes be polished out. For deeper scratches or chips, there are specialist cosmetic repair services available that can often make the damage invisible.
My window is not opening as smoothly as it used to.
This usually means the hinges need a good clean and lubrication. Open the window fully, wipe down the hinges to remove any dirt or grit, and apply a suitable silicone-based lubricant.
The colour on my door handle is starting to pit or fade.
The lifespan of hardware finishes can depend on the environment, especially in coastal or highly polluted areas. The mechanical parts of your handle are covered by your guarantee, and we can easily supply and fit a replacement if the finish deteriorates.
Can a single pane of glass in a double glazed unit be replaced?
No, this isn’t possible. A double glazed unit is a factory-sealed component containing two panes of glass and argon gas. If one pane breaks or the seal fails, the entire sealed unit needs to be replaced.
Do you offer a window and door maintenance service?
Yes, we can provide a ‘health check’ service for your windows and doors, even if we didn’t install them. We can make adjustments, replace worn parts, and help prolong their life.
I have lost the key to my window handle. Can you help?
Yes, certainly. In most cases, we can provide you with a replacement key. If not, we can quickly and easily replace the window handle itself with a new one.
How do I keep my door and window seals in good condition?
Just wipe them down with a soft, damp cloth and some soapy water a couple of times a year. This removes any grit and helps to keep the rubber seals supple and effective.
