FAQs – Security
Learn about common window and door problems and their solutions.
What is a 3-star cylinder lock and why is it so important?
A 3-star cylinder is the gold standard for door security. It has been independently tested to withstand common burglary methods like snapping, drilling, picking, and bumping. Many companies charge extra for this police-approved level of security, but at KMJ Windows & Doors Ltd, we include it as a free upgrade on all our doors.
How secure are your doors?
Your security is our top priority. All our composite, uPVC, and aluminium doors feature robust multi-point locking systems as standard. To give you the highest level of protection, we upgrade every single door we install with a 3-star, anti-snap, high-security cylinder lock, completely free of charge.
Are your windows secure?
Yes. All our windows feature key-lockable handles and multi-point locking systems that secure the opening part of the window to the frame on multiple sides. They are also internally beaded for maximum security and include hinge protectors that stop entry from the hinge side of the window.
What does ‘internally beaded’ mean?
This is a crucial security feature. It means the glass unit is held in place by beading strips on the inside of the window. This prevents burglars from being able to remove the glass from the outside to gain entry.
What is a multi-point locking system?
Instead of just a single lock, a multi-point system secures the door or window into the frame at several points (e.g., with hooks, bolts, and cams) when you lift the handle and turn the key. This makes it far more resistant to forced entry.
What does ‘Secured by Design’ mean?
‘Secured by Design’ is an official police security initiative. Products with this accreditation have been independently tested to meet rigorous standards to deter crime. We are happy to offer a range of products that meet this specification.
Are bifold doors secure?
Absolutely. Despite being a wall of glass, our bifold doors are incredibly secure. They feature high-security multi-point locking on the main traffic door, plus internal bolts and locks on the intermediate panels, all running in a robust aluminium track.
Do I need window locks for my insurance?
Most home insurance policies require key-operated locks on all accessible windows. All our windows come with these as standard, so you can be confident your home is secure and compliant.
Should I fit extra locks to my uPVC or composite door?
We strongly advise against this. Our doors are designed with a fully integrated, high-security locking system. Adding extra surface-mounted locks can damage the door’s structure and may invalidate your guarantee.
Can you fit a cat flap in a new door?
Yes, we can. Please let us know when you order, and we can ensure the correct panel or glass unit is specially manufactured to accommodate a cat or dog flap for you.
