FAQs – Common Problems & Troubleshooting
Learn about common window and door problems and their solutions.
Why is my double-glazed window misted or foggy inside?
If you see condensation between the two panes of glass, it means the seal on the double-glazing unit has failed, allowing moisture to get in. Unfortunately, this can’t be repaired. The sealed unit will need to be replaced to restore its insulating properties and clear view.
There’s condensation on the inside of my windows. Is this a problem?
Condensation on the inside of your windows is usually a sign of excess humidity in your home. Activities like cooking, showering, and drying clothes indoors can cause it. Improving ventilation often solves the issue. If it’s excessive, it might suggest your older windows are not insulating as well as modern ones.
I have condensation on the outside of my new windows. Is something wrong?
Not at all, this is actually a great sign! It shows your new windows are working perfectly. The outer pane of glass is kept cool because heat from your home isn’t escaping. It’s a hallmark of highly energy-efficient glazing.
Why is there a draft coming from my window or door?
Drafts are often caused by worn-out or compressed rubber seals (gaskets), or the window or door needing a slight adjustment on its hinges or locks to pull it in tighter against the frame.
My door is difficult to lock or unlock. What’s causing this?
This is a common issue, often due to the door dropping slightly over time, causing the lock to misalign with the frame. In most cases, our team can fix this with a simple hinge adjustment.
Why is the handle on my window is stiff or not closing properly?
This could be a simple case of the locking mechanism needing lubrication. However, it can also indicate a more serious issue. It’s best not to force it, as this could cause more damage. Give us a call, and we can advise.
My older uPVC door or window has turned yellow. Can this be fixed?
Unfortunately, some first-generation uPVC materials could discolour from sun exposure. While specialist cleaners can improve the appearance, they often can’t reverse it completely. Modern, high-quality uPVC from KMJ Windows & Doors Ltd is fully UV-stabilised to prevent this from ever happening.
Water is leaking from my window frame. What should I do?
This is usually a sign that the drainage channels in the frame are blocked. These small, concealed slots are designed to let rainwater escape. If clearing them carefully doesn’t work, there may be an issue with the seals.
My patio or bifold door is difficult to slide. Why?
The most common cause is dirt and grit building up in the tracks. Give them a good clean with a vacuum cleaner and a damp cloth. If the problem continues, the rollers might need adjusting or replacing.
The key is stuck in my door lock! What should I do?
Firstly, don’t force it. Try to apply a small amount of a specialist lock lubricant (not a heavy oil like WD-40). Gently wiggle the key to spread the lubricant. If it’s still stuck, it’s safest to call a professional.
